Hidden Gems: Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz's Godhood Continuum

Hidden Gems is another new feature which will focus on rare work and appearances by popular writers and artists in obscure or lesser known publications.

Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz were knee deep in their groundbreaking Moon Knight run when the writer/artist duo offered the first part of their sci-fi epic "Godhood Continuum" to New Media's 1981 magazine Adventure Illustrated #1. This was a new type of format for New Media, who were attempting to assemble the best material by well known artists and writers interested in expanding their craftsmanship beyond superhero fare.

This first chapter is titled, "The Magenta Core" and follows the plight of Commander Copperhead and his troops in war against an army of android warriors called the Fax-Men, who are sent by colonists of the asteroid they currently inhabit.

Unfortunately the Godhood Continuum story was never completed, as Adventure Illustrated only lasted one issue before being cancelled. The story itself was a bit hard to follow and the art was rushed in places, most likely due to time constraints. I enjoyed how the "Psych-Channel" played out on the helmets, thought that was a neat idea. Bonus gem goes to Jim Starlin for a fabulous front cover on this issue.
